The US Firm's Self-Driving Cabs Planned for London Roads Next Year.

The US-based enterprise Waymo has revealed that its autonomous cabs will be operational for booking on London's thoroughfares starting next year.

UK Capital Named as Pioneering European City for Self-Driving Ride-Hailing.

London will be established as the first European city to host an autonomous taxi service, akin to those already familiar in San Francisco and several American urban centers utilizing Waymo's innovative platform.

Preliminary Trials to Start with Safety Drivers.

Waymo stated that its fleet are currently en route to London and will commence driving on the city's public roads in the coming weeks with safety drivers behind the wheel.

Waymo – originally established as a offshoot from Google's self-driving car project and belonging to the Alphabet family – explained it would scale up operations and work closely with the Department for Transport and the city's mobility organization to secure the required permissions to offer totally self-driving services by 2026.

Additional companies, such as Uber and the UK-based tech company Wayve, have also revealed their own intentions to pilot driverless vehicles in the city next year.

A fuller rollout of driverless vehicles is anticipated in the UK after the new law fully takes effect in late 2027.

Waymo presently has links to Britain after establishing its inaugural European engineering hub in Oxford in 2019.

It is also starting services in Tokyo using JLR EVs, marking its second existing operation beyond the US.
