A trio of officers perished and no fewer than 15 others got wounded in what appears to be premeditated blast caused by gas at a country home in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The detonation was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the house close to the Verona region to carry out an removal notice for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three victims who died served in the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals were taken into custody at the scene and a third person who escaped after the incident was located not long after. The trio have been taken to medical facility.

The blast could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the location revealed the building reduced to a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who added that attempts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The head of the Veneto area, the regional head, stated the property was facing an court order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to speak to the family members who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the officers came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the siblings set off the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Commander Papagno stated to reporters.

A propane tank had been activated, and the blast directly hit our personnel,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the property, the interior minister said.

Casualties and Damage

The wounded by the incident consisted of eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three members of Italy's state police and a firefighter.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

The prosecutor was convinced the explosion had occurred on a level above the access point and informed the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the explosion, he mentioned members had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the propane tanks being activated”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants stated to Italian media, mentioning that the three had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence the Defence Minister united with other political leaders in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had died in the performance of their duties.
